Costa Kotselas is a composer, producer and artist who has worked with some of Hollywood's biggest film composers including, Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, Graeme Revell, Paul Haslinger and many others. Costa has also had much of his own music on TV shows including "Charmed" and "Beverly Hills 90210" and films including "Domino" and "The Girls' Room".
Having worked with Hans Zimmer for three years and Harry Gregson-Williams for the past 3 years, his involvement with films like Black Hawk Down, Spy Game and numerous others, Costa's innovative fusing of ambient techno instrumentals with traditional ethnic voices is capturing the ears and attention of Hollywood.
Costa was born in the U.S., yet spent most of his summers growing up in Greece, where he gained early exposure to different cultures. His interest into the history of his own heritage as well as the culture, music, art and religions of many other foreign countries has enriched his vision that is directly reflected and expressed in his unique musical language. .
To score a film, he believes that the story's time and setting must be researched in order to ensure the accuracy of the period's music. The orchestration consists of the proper instruments playing relavent melodies and rhythms establishing the mood and feel of the scene. Costa enhances the accuracy of the music by using technology. He combines more modern rhythms and sounds to create something entirely new that couldn't have been possible at the time yet still stays true to the original style and form. He likes to use specific elements that are present in the film as sound sources which are then played along with the original and newer sounds together resulting in the contemporary yet relavent score.
His approach to film scoring is bi-polar. He believes that the adaptation of the latest technology can be used to create a soothing effect on the listener with the use of new and diverse sounds. He also feels that the human aspect is most important because emotion is translated into music then communicated to the listener by whatever means. Costa works to find the perfect balance between the two. His goal is to sucessfully be able to transmit human emotions to the listeners through the use of technology and music.
